Everyone is preparing for the fast approaching May 26th start date of one of the most famous and popular festivals featured in Charleston, the Spoleto art festival. The seventeen day event is a must-see summer experience when visiting in the summer. Some people may wonder what exactly Spoleto’s name means and where it comes from. The event is named after Charleston’s only official sister city, the Italian town of Spoleto. Like its American counterpart, Spoleto is a famed town filled with beauty and culture wherever you go. Here are five things to know about this Italian sister city.
This small city lies in the famed region of Umbria in the heart of Italy. It is conveniently located near places like Tuscany, which it borders, and the beautiful city of Rome, which is only a 90 minute drive away.
Spoleto hosts its own popular seventeen day festival in the summer, from which the American version draws inspiration from. Called Festival dei Due Mondi, meaning Festival of Two Worlds, it is filled with art, culture, music, food, and opera. It helps draw in tourists and economic growth to not only the town but the region.
Similar to the Holy City, Spoleto is known for its historic man made features, as well as its gorgeous scenery. Among the city’s many excellent historic sights are its first-century Roman amphitheatre, the 12th-century Duomo, 13th-century Ponte delle Torri aqueduct and the 14th-century hilltop fortress, Rocca Albornoziana. The town sits in the Italian hills that feature green mountains in the summer and snowcapped parks in the winter, providing visuals all year round.
Whether you are a seasoned restraunteer or a newbie, there is something to please all types of tastebuds. Spoleto features over 300 restaurants, including six Michelin-starred eateries. From fun bars to relaxing cafes to romantic date spots, you’ll want to try to visit them all.
Whether you are looking for a family trip with the children or a romantic getaway, there is something in this town for everyone. Highlights include a winery, museums, hiking trails, and theaters. A variety of hotels, B&Bs, and rentals are also available in the city limits and the region.
